Palmer Park
Reading Location Tour 8: Palmer Park
Long gone from Palmer's park are Paxton's notable heated glasshouses, wherein pineapples were first grown in England in 1889 and Dr Palmer, noted member of the Royal Society, not only lost a foot to an enlarged venus flytrap but also conducted his pioneering work into the perspiration rates of poor people. Later a licensed prowling ground where Edwardian philanthropists could meet fallen women in order to later save them, Palmer Park is now host to a well-equipped sports ground and popular dumping ground for mob hits.
It was here that William Winkie was found murdered in a particularly violent manner; DI Jack Spratt was initially unsure whether Winkie -who was Humpty's neighbour - was connected with the death of the Big Egg himself.
