A breastfeeding mother was forced to issue a grovelling apology as her remarks about UKIP leader Nigel Farage were, as she claimed: 'misrepresented'.

Mrs Julie Sfortz was asked her views on live radio yesterday regarding the fact that Claridge's Hotel had requested Mr Farage to cover himself with a napkin as his presence was upsetting other diners.

Mrs Sfortz agreed with this sentiment, adding that businesses like Claridges should be able to set their own rules, and although she had nothing personal against Mr Farage, could see how other members of the public might be offended, and that moving the UKIP leader to 'a corner of the room' should be the hotel's prerogative.

"After all," she is reported as saying, "Claridges have to run a business."

After a concerted twitter and media offensive led by UKIP supporters, Mrs Sfortz was forced to redefine her comments and claimed she had been 'misrepresented' by an aggressive and one-sided media.

She made it clear that although she would never think of voting for Mr Farage, she appreciated that he had a right to be in Claridges, and it was up to others to be tolerant and understanding of his views, and that anyone who wants to spout a narrow xenophobic agenda in public should be free to do so, so long as they do it 'as unostentatiously as possible - it's simply good manners.'

Unusually, Mr Farage was unavailable for comment.
