I had this idea that The Eyre Affair would have illustrations within the pages much like a thirties adventure book, and Maggy Roberts and I came up with seven or eight ideas. My publishers liked them but didn't think it right on a debut novel - although I wangled in a few adverts right at the end, but only the UK edition. For Lost in a Good Book I tried again to have the illustrations included, but to no avail. However, we did get a frontispiece for the UK edition in black and white and colour for the US edition. The US copies of the book have never carried any adverts at the end. Click on a link below to reach a selection of pictures.
